Weird Animal Facts - Strange But True

A giraffe can clean its ears with its 21-inch tongue. It is commonly known that the giraffe is the tallest animal in the world, sometimes reaching a height in excess of 18 ft. Along with its long neck, the giraffe has a very long tongue, more than a foot-and-a-half long, with which it can clean its ears!

Butterflies taste with their feet. Their taste sensors are located in the feet, and by standing on their food, they can taste it! All butterflies have six legs and feet. In some species such as the monarch, the front pair of legs remains tucked up under the body most of the time, and are difficult to see.

Dolphins sleep with one eye open.

Elephants are the only animals that can't jump even though they have the same number of bones in their feet as other mammals. The bones in an elephant's foot are more closely packed together than other mammals so they do not have the flexibility or spring mechanisms that would enable them to jump.

Owls are the only birds who can see the color blue.

Polar bears are left-handed.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. This is due to the small brain cavity in the skull of the ostrich and the need for a large field of vision to watch for predators, thus larger eyes.

A snail can sleep 3-4 years at a time! In fact even regular snails can stretch their sleep to a week. Snails hibernate too. We are lucky to actually see a snail that moves! No matter how SLOWLY!
